Dr tu tran
MBBS MPH FRANZCO
  • Dr Tran is a Melbourne-based Ophthalmologist specialising in Cataract, Glaucoma and Pterygium surgery.

  • Her clinical interests include the management (laser and surgical) of glaucoma, ocular surface disease in glaucoma, pterygium and cataract surgery. Her other particular interests include treatment of hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm by botulium toxin injections.

  • Dr Tran completed her medical degree at the University of Queensland and moved to the UK to train in ophthalmology in Cardiff, WALES with some of the world’s leading ophthalmology surgeons. She went on to complete her Masters of Public Health (majoring in Epidemiology) prior to returning to Queensland to complete her general ophthalmology training. She trained with Professor Lawrence Hirst, known for his “PERFECT” technique for pterygium surgery. Thereafter, she completed a general fellowship at Queensland Eye Institute (QEI).

  • Dr Tran later moved to Melbourne and completed  her glaucoma fellowship training  at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH). She acquired subspecialist experience in management of complex glaucoma and challenging cataract surgery. She now holds consultant ophthalmologist position at the RVEEH.

  • Dr Tran is actively involved in teaching optometrists, ophthalmology fellows and registrars. She also volunteers as a “Visionary” for Sight for All (SFA), a volunteer charity organisation involved in training glaucoma surgery to registrars in South East Asia as well as Australian Health Humanitarian Aid (AHHA), providing essential eye surgery to those less fortunate.

  • Dr Tran is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO). She is on the board of examiners for RANZCO. She is the examiner for the RACE and OBCK exams (the final year and first year exams) for ophthalmology registrar training.

HUMANITARIAN AID AND VOLUNTEER WORK
For many years, Dr Tran has been volunteering with Sight For All, visiting countries in South East Asia as one of the "Visionaries", helping to train local ophthalmologists in modern glaucoma techniques and management of complex eye conditions.
As part of their Glaucoma In-Country Fellowship Project, Dr Tran visited Vietnam, Mongolia and Cambodia on numerous occasions to teach general ophthalmologists in partner countries to become specialists in treating patients with a range of complex eye conditions, including childhood blinding conditions. Glaucoma is a leading form of blindness globally but is also responsible for significant and devastating visual loss in East Asia. The majority of glaucoma is treatable, but requires skilled eye doctors and appropriate equipment to manage effectively.
Over the years, the valuable contributions that Dr Tran, other Visionaries and Sight For All have made in these countries can be seen significantly improving eye health and reducing blindness in the local community through a compounding effect, where trained glaucoma specialists train their own Fellows in-country, further increasing the number of locals able to treated. Sight For All has donated many resources, including SLT and YAG laser, operating equipment, B-Scan ultrasound and Retcam photography.
Late 2025, Dr Tran returns to Cambodia as one of the humanitarian volunteers for Australian Health Humanitarian Aid.
Dr Tran will be travelling with a team of 111 other volunteers consisting of ophthalmologists, optometrists, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and other professionals to provide free, life changing eye surgery, eye care, medical and dental treatment to the disabled and underprivileged. They will also help train local doctors and students using the latest techniques and technologies from Australia and distribute much needed food parcels to the poor outside Phnom Penh.
The volunteers will provide 500 very challenging cataract/pterygia surgeries and 500 complex dental procedures over 6 days, using 2 theatres, performing roughly 80-100 cases per day.
Needless to say, Dr Tran is looking forward to this immensely rewarding experience and will no doubt develop some life-long friendships from the trip.
