Dr George Yu Xiang Kong is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and Glaucoma subspecialist with particular interest in glaucoma caused by angle closure and inflammatory eye diseases. He is experienced in complex glaucoma and cataract surgery.
Dr Kong completed his medical degree (MBBS) from The University of Melbourne, Australia. He successfully completed his PhD in 2011 supported by National Health and Medical Research Council Postgraduate Training Scholarship (collaboration between Centre for Eye Research Australia and Department of Optometry & Vision Sciences, The University of Melbourne). He was awarded the prestigious Eberhard Dodt Memorial Award from International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV) for his work.
Dr Kong subsequently completed RANZCO accredited ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Subsequently he embarked on a subspecialty Glaucoma fellowship at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital where he gained medical and surgical expertise in the treatment of glaucoma. He then travelled to Cambridge, United Kingdom, to work with world-renown glaucoma specialist Professor Keith Martin for further glaucoma training, where he gained expertise in advanced management of complex glaucoma conditions such glaucoma caused by inflammatory eye diseases (uveitis) and children’s glaucoma. He is also trained in laser procedures for glaucoma and in new surgical techniques of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.
Dr Kong published over thirty international peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and is a reviewer of several ophthalmology and optometry journals. He was instrumental in the development of the GONE (Glaucoma Optic Neuropathy Evaluation) website which has helped thousands of optometrists and junior ophthalmologists around the world improve their optic nerve examination techniques.
Dr Kong has appointments as Consultant ophthalmologist at glaucoma subspecialty and general ophthalmology clinics at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, the Austin Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. He has an Honorary Clinical Lecturer position at The University of Melbourne.
Besides English, he also speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese fluently.
