A/PROF Elaine Chong

A/Prof Elaine Chong completed her Ophthalmology training and Medical Retina Fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital (RVEEH). She then practiced as an associate Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Singapore National Eye Centre, where she completed her 2nd fellowship in Corneal, External disease and Refractive Surgery.

A/Prof Chong is a consultant ophthalmologist in both the cornea and medical retina units at the RVEEH. She performs various lamellar partial thickness corneal transplants which are preferential to the traditional full thickness cornea transplants. A/Prof Chong is also an experienced cataract surgeon. She has performed more than 2000 cataract surgeries, including femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgeries.

A/Prof Chong is a Fellow of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO). She was awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence at the RANZCO Advanced Clinical Exams in 2011. This single medal is awarded to the most outstanding candidate in the final exit examinations across Australia & New Zealand for the year.

A/Prof Chong also holds a PhD and Masters of Epidemiology from the University of Melbourne. Research work from her PhD was selected out of over 6000 submitted papers as one of the 40 newest and most innovative research conducted at Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) conference in USA, and she was also awarded the Young Investigator’s Merit Award (Clinical Sciences) at the ASIA-ARVO Scientific Meeting (2007).

She currently has over 30 peer-reviewed publications and has written 2 book chapters. Her recent work on Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) was awarded the Best Surgical Video at the RANZCO conference in 2016. This was also featured in the AAO One Network internationally.

A/Prof Chong is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), International Society of Refractive Surgery, Cornea Society, Asian Cornea Society, and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists. She is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

A/Prof Chong specialises in:
  • Cataract surgery - Small incision sutureless surgery with premium multifocal and toric intraocular lenses to correct astigmatism.
  • Cornea diseases & Cornea Transplantation Surgery - Management of complex cornea diseases including keratoconus & Fuchs cornea dystrophy.
  • Medical Retina - Age related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic retinopathy & Retinal Vein occlusion Management.
  • Intra-Vitreal injections & Laser treatment for the above conditions.
  • Pterygium surgery (sutureless) with conjunctival autografts.
